Closure of the Grand Curtius on 1 and 2 November 2025
Don't forget, the Grand Curtius will be closed on 1 and 2 November.
Did you know?
The Grand Curtius houses striking works that tell the story of our relationship with death, funeral rites and the afterlife.
Among them:
- The tomb of a 6th-century Frankish warrior, discovered in Herstal, with his sword, flint and personal belongings, ready to face eternity.
- A medieval tombstone with a primitive design, that of Chevalier Antoine, presumed founder of the former priory of Saint-Nicolas en Glain in the 13th century.
- A decomposing recumbent effigy (known as a transi), eaten away by worms, sculpted in 1537, a striking figure of human decomposition, set in a Renaissance setting.
- A 15th-century funerary monument depicting a Crucifixion and a recumbent effigy, sculpted in black Tournai stone, from the tombstone of Thierry de Heetvelde.
- A depiction of Christ's burial, a high relief in limestone attributed to a realist workshop, formerly located in the Church of Saint-Pierre in Dreux.
These works are not just relics: they are powerful reminders of our relationship with memory, with death, and with what connects us to past generations.
